By The Reflector's count in September, Battle Ground already has 18 coffee-centric businesses, and a 19th is on the way. That is a lot of espresso for one small city. Yet between now and spring, the total barely changes, because nearly every move on the calendar fills a gap or changes who serves a particular corner. By March, a few familiar orders will be coming through different windows.
Here is how the map is shifting, one address at a time.
The Village Keeps Its Coffee Counter, Under a Familiar Name
The first gap opened in August. As The Reflector reported, Blue Castle Coffee left its unit at 802 SE 14th Place in Battle Ground Village after choosing not to renew its lease.
The replacement was announced on September 30. Al & Ernie's Bakery Cafe, which opened on Main Street in 2024, has leased the 940-square-foot space for a second shop called Al & Ernie's in the Village. It plans to begin remodeling late this year and open in early 2027. The new shop will be about a third the size of the Main Street café. It will serve espresso, coffee, tea and a limited selection of baked goods, while the original keeps its full breakfast and lunch menus.
The company's own announcement framed the move as keeping the Village's coffee counter in place. General manager Devin Bowen said the second location ensures "that Battle Ground Village maintains a coffee shop for residents, employers and guests." Al & Ernie's belongs to the Battle Ground Hospitality Collective, which is owned by Battle Ground brothers Camden and Mac Spiller. They also own The Reflector, which ran the announcement.
So the Village doesn't gain a coffee shop this winter. It keeps one, after a few quiet months between tenants. Until the remodel is done, the nearest Al & Ernie's is the original at 802 E. Main St., open Tuesday through Saturday with bakery items made by hand each day.
West Main Gets a Café With Chairs
The second change adds something genuinely new on the west side of town. Brewed Awakenings Coffee Roasters has announced a January 2027 café at West Main Commons, the mixed-use project under construction near Main Street and SW 13th Avenue. According to The Reflector's July coverage, the café will have indoor seating and Main Street frontage. The company called Battle Ground "one of our most requested locations for years."
Brewed Awakenings was founded in 1989 and roasts its own beans. It already runs cafés in Vancouver and Ridgefield, and it has also announced locations in La Center and at The Palisades in Camas for 2027.
The January date depends on the building. In June, the project's leasing representative told The Reflector that the first retail spaces at West Main Commons, 1305 W. Main St., were expected to be delivered by the end of 2026. Leases have also been signed with OnPoint Credit Union, Edward Jones, Barbie Lounge and a ramen restaurant. Next year, a weekday coffee run on West Main may turn into a short walk past several new storefronts.
Brewed Awakenings is the business The Reflector counts as number 19. On a stretch of Main Street better known for drive-thru windows, a roaster with indoor tables is a different kind of stop.
805 W. Main St. Is a Proposal, Not a Stand
The 7 Brew plan has drawn the most coverage, and it is still at an early stage. At the end of August, Arkansas-based 7 Brew Coffee submitted materials for a pre-application conference with the City of Battle Ground. The proposed drive-thru is at 805 W. Main St. The chain has no Pacific Northwest locations yet, and The Reflector said it would become the city's 20th coffee-centric business if it is built.
That parking area already serves drinks. Thirst Trap Soda Shack has operated at 805 W. Main St. since November 2024, and Espresso Express and Coffee Creation, two long-running coffee stands, are close by. A later Reflector installment reported that the preliminary site plan puts 7 Brew's 510-square-foot building where the soda shack stands now. It also reported that the soda shack is still open and operating under its current lease. The same report noted that a fuel station proposal for the same spot got as far as a pre-application conference in 2025 and went no further.
A pre-application is an early step and does not mean the project is approved. The project was not on the agenda for the city's October 14 Planning Commission meeting. This winter, the soda and the coffee on that lot come from the same windows as last winter.
Why the Local Counters Hold Their Corners
The 7 Brew proposal led The Reflector to ask some local owners how a town with this many coffee shops keeps them all going. Their answers explain the rest of the map. Austin Slagle, owner of Dev's Coffee Bar, put it this way: "Every single one of these coffee shops has a specific thing that they're known for. They're the same but they're not."
For Dev's, that thing is food. Slagle told the paper that bagels account for more than half the shop's sales. Sam Cruz, owner of Espresso Express, told The Reflector that her stand stays consistent and offers specialty blended drinks, including a popular toffee crunch. The stand has been in Battle Ground for more than 30 years. Slagle compared the 7 Brew model to the national drive-thru brands already in town, Dutch Bros and Black Rock.
| Stop | Where | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Dev's Coffee Bar | 316 E. Main St. | Family-run, open since August 2022 in a restored historic church; bagels are more than half of sales |
| Founder's Coffee & Mercantile | 317 E. Main St. | Locally roasted coffee, pastries and homemade muffins |
| Al & Ernie's Bakery Cafe | 802 E. Main St. | Handmade daily bakery items, full breakfast and lunch, Tuesday through Saturday |
| Rabbit Hole Eatery & Coffee | 1214 SW Scotton Way, Suite 105 | Coffee and baked goods seven days a week |
| Espresso Express | Wilco parking lot | More than 30 years in Battle Ground; specialty blended drinks such as the toffee crunch |
Two of those addresses are on the same block. Dev's at 316 E. Main St. and Founder's at 317 E. Main St. are both on the 300 block of East Main, so one short stretch offers both a bagel breakfast and a café with a mercantile. This Saturday, October 24, Founder's is hosting a Family Recipe Book Workshop from 4 to 7 p.m. On the Scotton Way side of town, Rabbit Hole Eatery & Coffee is the one on this list open every day of the week.
The Order Things Land In
Taken together, the confirmed changes arrive in this order:
- Now through late 2026: The Village unit at 802 SE 14th Place sits between tenants, and the Al & Ernie's remodel is planned to start late this year.
- By the end of 2026: The first retail spaces at West Main Commons are expected to be delivered, according to the project's leasing representative.
- January 2027: Brewed Awakenings plans to open at West Main Commons.
- Early 2027: Al & Ernie's in the Village is expected to open.
Two items have no date yet. 7 Brew's plans for 805 W. Main St. are still at the pre-application stage. At the Albertsons-anchored Battle Ground Market Center, The Reflector reported in August that Camp Donut signage had gone up on Unit 111 and the city had issued tenant-improvement permits, with the shop still preparing to open.
By spring, the Village should have its coffee counter back under a new name, and West Main should have a sit-down roaster it lacks today. The city's count of coffee businesses should be only one higher than it was in September.
